How iTypeTests Works
Everything you need to know about our typing tests, scoring methodology, and features.
How WPM is Calculated
The Standard WPM Formula
WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in MinutesA "word" in typing is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces). This standardization ensures fair comparison regardless of the actual word lengths in the text.
Example Calculation:
If you type 300 characters in 1 minute:
WPM = (300 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 60 WPM
Gross WPM
Your raw typing speed counting all characters typed, including errors. This shows how fast your fingers move, regardless of mistakes.
Net WPM
Your adjusted speed after accounting for errors. Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Errors × Penalty). This is what matters for exams.
How Accuracy is Calculated
Accuracy = (Correct Characters ÷ Total Characters) × 100Accuracy measures the percentage of characters you typed correctly. Higher accuracy means fewer errors and better quality typing.
Example Calculation:
If you type 285 correct characters out of 300 total:
Accuracy = (285 ÷ 300) × 100 = 95%
Why Accuracy Matters
In government typing exams, errors are penalized. A fast but inaccurate typist often scores lower than a slower but accurate one. We recommend aiming for 95%+ accuracy.
How Errors Are Handled
Real-time Error Detection
As you type, incorrect characters are highlighted immediately. You can see your mistakes in real-time, helping you identify problem areas.
Backspace Policy
You can use backspace to correct mistakes. In our standard tests, corrected errors don't count against your final accuracy. However, exam simulation modes may have stricter error policies to match actual exam conditions.
Error Types We Track
- Wrong character: Typing 'a' instead of 's'
- Extra character: Adding characters not in the original text
- Missing character: Skipping a character in the text
- Case errors: Wrong capitalization (if case-sensitive mode)
Test Modes Available
Practice Mode
Relaxed environment with no time pressure. Perfect for learning and building muscle memory. Choose your own text or use our word lists.
Timed Test
Standard typing test with fixed duration. Your WPM and accuracy are calculated based on what you complete within the time limit.
Exam Simulation
Matches actual exam conditions for SSC, CPCT, Railway, etc. Same duration, passage type, and scoring as the real exam.
Race Mode
Compete against other typists in real-time. Race to finish a passage first while maintaining accuracy.
Platform Features
Multiple Test Durations
Choose from 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 5-minute tests. Short tests are great for quick practice; longer tests better represent sustained typing ability.
Multi-Language Support
Practice typing in English, Hindi (Kruti Dev, Mangal), and Punjabi (Raavi). Each language has its own keyboard layout and font support.
Exam Simulation
Practice with exam-specific patterns for SSC, CPCT, Railway, and other government typing tests. Match the actual exam format and requirements.
